Backflow Prevention – Help Edmonton Protect the Quality of It’s Drinking Water While Keeping Your Home or Business Safe!

What is backflow?

Backflow occurs when water flows opposite to its normal or intended direction. In water supply systems, water is normally maintained at a significant pressure to enable water to flow from the tap, shower etc. When this pressure fails or is reduced, as can happen if pipes freeze, a water main bursts or in the event of a large storm, the reduced pressure in the pipe may allow contaminated water from the ground, from storage or from other sources to be drawn up into the system and potentially into your home or business.

 

What can you do to prevent backflow?

Backflow preventers are a mechanical plumbing device used to protect drinkable water supplies from pollution or contamination due to backflow.  They are installed in the plumbing system to prevent water from flowing backward in the system, keeping drinking water from becoming unstable and preventing water and sewage from entering your home or business.  A properly working and maintained backflow device will ensure water flows safely by trapping water that begins to flow back into the community water system or your home/business.

 

Who can install or test backflow prevention devices?

Only licensed plumbers with backflow prevention accreditation issued by a registered training organization can inspect, commission and test backflow devices.  Vigor Mechanical Ltd will come out to your home or business and inspect your lines to determine what type and how many back flow valves you will need.  We will install the valve(s) and/or test the system to make sure everything is working correctly so you can have complete peace of mind. Keep in mind that all commercial applications must be tested annually according to the City of Edmonton.
